so how do you do that in a vented system? I might have to wait a week for that unless its an easy task as the old boiler is being replaced next week and they'll flush the entire system before fitting the new boiler. I appreciate people trying to diagnose stuff over the internet can prove testing but damn this is weird. I've just spent the last 2 hrs up there and its as quiet as a graveyard
 
You said the cylinder is in a sealed system?
yes the cylinder(water)is a sealed system as we got rid of the huge gravity tank in the loft but didnt change the heating to sealed as alot of the pipework joints downstairs are 33yrs old and theres high probability when moving to a sealed system it would start blowing joints so we left the heating a vented system
