High pitched sound that rises and falls for hours on end.

No, just reduce the pressure to zero.
so how do you do that in a vented system? I might have to wait a week for that unless its an easy task as the old boiler is being replaced next week and they'll flush the entire system before fitting the new boiler. I appreciate people trying to diagnose stuff over the internet can prove testing but damn this is weird. I've just spent the last 2 hrs up there and its as quiet as a graveyard

You said the cylinder is in a sealed system?
yes the cylinder(water)is a sealed system as we got rid of the huge gravity tank in the loft but didnt change the heating to sealed as alot of the pipework joints downstairs are 33yrs old and theres high probability when moving to a sealed system it would start blowing joints so we left the heating a vented system

So how do you do that? Shut off the cold feed at the cylinder and open the hot water taps
Okay depressurised it and the sound was still there and you could hear it slightly in the other room. Honestly it's absolutely baffling. Quiet all day and as soon as it's bedtime within 10-15 mins it starts and lasts till atleast 1000. Last night was just bloody ridiculous at how loud it was. I think after the boilers been replaced if it's still there I'm going to have to get someone in. Who that someone will be I've no idea. It's just so weird.

Well your tests show that it isn't connected with the water, heating or electrics, not sure where you'd look next.

.. time to get a priest in!
Honestly mate it's absolutely weird. Brought over a mate who obviously thought I was off my head. 10-15 mins after going upstairs and it starts and here's where it gets even stranger. Regardless of the time I go upstairs. I went up on 3 different times at night over 3 days and everytime the same. He just looked and said WTF? I'm stumped

Can you post a recording of the sound? Might give someone here a clue.
Hi Alec, I'll see if I can record it. The other day it was pretty loud. I opened an access hatch in the wall upstairs and sat on the other side of the wall sitting behind the king span and couldn't hear a thing. Go back into the room at the corner in the middle and you can hear it. I'll draw a plan so you can get Idea of the layout. Upstairs all the pipework is on the opposite side apart from the pipework to the radiator that sits on the wall 1m in front of the corner. You'll know yourself sound from trapped air in pipes can travel but damn this is baffling. It's now 2255 and the other half has sent a text saying the room is quiet. Now I'll bet you within 15 mins of me going up it'll start. It's uncanny.
