Hikvision cctv system design

Hi all, I plan on fitting Hikvision cctv to my property. I’ve ordered 3 Hikvision DS-2CD2387G3-LIS2UY/SRB 8MP ColorVu3.0 Turret IP Cameras.

I’ve done a lot of research on the best NVR for my proposed system but there’s so many of them I’m at the analysis paralysis stage!

Please recommend me an appropriate NVR

Don’t know what you want to achieve, I can’t be certain your cameras are suitable for your needs.

You need ideally a NVR that can decide at least 3 channels of 8MP cameras.
The cameras themselves have some analytics built in and not sure you need to repeat this necessarily at the NVR, but it can give more flexibility.

So what would you like to achieve?

One camera high level on the front of my house as an overview of drive etc. One camera front porch, one camera back door.

Not sure what you mean by what I’m trying to achieve. I’d like to monitor my property via an app on my phone and have 25-30 days storage on my NVR and be able to get clearer pictures via a tv/monitor if I needed to zoom in etc.

The cameras are mainly a deterrent but obviously would like decent video evidence if something was to happen in the future.

like I say cant comment if adequate as it depends on area covered and lens and distance away from camera, cameras high up tend to get nice head shots rather than faces.

I have customers were a 2MP camera on a wide angle lens would be adequate and others where higher resolution and narrower field of view.

That aside, 8MP on a wide angle lens should get you something decent at some distance over a large area.

minimum probably an M Series 8 channel NVR with 8TB plus of storage, be warned though going as high as you can go may be more cost effective. Make sure its surveillance grade, Wester Digital or Segate would be my preference not had good experience with Toshiba but they do tend to be cheaper.

Do you intend to add more cameras at a later date?

Last quote I did it worked out cheaper to put a bigger HDD that the one that met there requirements, but not convinced that would be the case on yours as 8TB to a 16TB is a big jump and they went from a 12-16TB and that was actually cheaper.

also you can opt for built in POE or no POE in the NVR. Most domestics go back to the NVR, but we have a few customers with out buildings that connect back to the NVR via the network at the property rather than direct camera to NVR

Appreciate your advice. What is the model number of the NVR you suggest I look at please? Is there a reason you recommend an 8 channel rather than a 4 channel?

I don’t think I would add any extra further cameras in the future but some extra capacity would make sense if I decided I wanted to.

M series, 8 channel as a minimum.

have a look at the specs for a few and ask specific questions about a model.

I want a car a read car that can do 70mph..... which one.

what fuel type what gearbox, air con etc etc.

so an 8 Channel versions can do all 8 channels at 8MP at the same time. also believe the 14TB is old and can support 16TB but would have to check on the builds possibly, certainly the last one we put in was capable of 16TB as thats what is fitted.

but say you have 3 cameras at 8MP, but you wanted another 6@4 MP that should be possible but not 9 x 8MP cameras.

its not strictly the case but its were you need to be looking as an indicator

there are various models so M4 allows 4 HDDs an M2 2 hard drives

the more specific you are the better the match can be made.

DS-7608NXI-K1/8P(D) for example would work but not much scope later on but much cheaper than an M series​

DS-7608NXI-K1/8P(D) with 8TB HDD would e about £420 from us supply only. but​

DS-7608NI-M2/8P with 8TB HDD would be around £590, couldn't find an M1 variant on same footing.​

but the K1 would potentially be a problem if you needed more cameras and hence why I ask, the a s 7616-M2/16P is around £645, £50 more but either work out cheaper than 2 x K series.

hence why its important to know what you want and if you have any plans, above is just for illustration purposes but based on my pricing today and is not an advertisement. Not sure how much it would cost an end user from a retail supplier.

I definitely won’t be adding more cameras so 3 cameras at 8MP is the maximum.

Are the two NVR’s linked above new models? I have a slight concern about what I’ve read regarding software updates and how long they would be available if I used an older model?

The cameras I’ve bought have audio capabilities which we hope to utilise. Would this affect which NVR to go for or is that all to do with the cameras themselves?

I’m not desperate to spend a fortune a top of the range NVR I’d just like one suitable for my requirements so will gladly accept your expert guidance on which one is best for my situation.

I have all of the cat 5e cables ran in already so it will be a POE system.

They aren't top of the range nor bottom of the range, you need to look at the specs and decide which is the best for you.

The HDD is a significant part of the cost.

As for support that is upto the manufacturer and they could pull it tomorrow or support for 20 years there is no way I can know that for sure.
NVRs I put in 12 years ago are still working fine don't believe they are updating anymore, but if it isn't broke it doesn't need fixing,

However lets say The USA or UK fall out with China and place restrictions then things may not work, there was a period where you had to use the hik store to get the latest app version for example.

In our industry seems to be a rush to market and sort the issues out later, so you may have issues if you use the very latest tech, not had to do much with the M series, however there was issue with how to add certain doorbells/ intercom systems and had to be done a certain way depending on firmware versions.

Get people buying grey imports as they are cheaper but they cant always be updated.

On the information supplied against the specs I have seen for those products I would look at those 2 options and make the decision.

I can certainly see the Amazon Hikstore (supplied by bits and bobs) works out cheaper but no idea who they are or what they are actually selling and what level of support you would get but certainly you can get the stuff cheaper that appears to be the same stuff.

I very much doubt you will find a 4 channel variant capable of handling 3 x 8MP cameras readily available form Hik.

Why didn't you get advice when you were buying the cameras from the seller?

You could of come to here or other forums to confirm on what your being offered.
