Microwave still works, but when you start a programme in makes a load thunk sound. Any ideas? Is it the magnatron (or whatever it is called) on the way out? Thanks in advance for any replies. Scare the heck out of my wife and daughter and the dog is too scared to come into the kitchen.

Best advice?....Pull the plug & leave it unplugged until it is fixed, or scrapped. Microwave ovens are not DIY projects. Dogs can sense these things

Thanks zipper, but is it something you get fixed or just throw away and start with a new one.

Most things can be fixed...if spares are available. But then it comes down to cost. At the end of the day replacement may be more economical than repair. Ask your local domestic appliance workshop for a quote/advice, or shop around for a replacement. You really shouldn't go digging around inside a microwave....high voltage capacitors can store a lethal charge long after the plug is pulled.
