Hi

Building regs have told us we need a externally exhausted fan in the new kitchen. We hadn't planned for this, because for whatever reason we thought the 4 large opening windows would be enough, and the design is such that we don't really want a cooker hood dropping down from the ceiling.

We do however have a duct outlet we could reuse from the utility that was knocked through.

Is it acceptable to use a normal humidity switched in ceiling extractor fan (not a fancy stainless steel hood) with the correct flow rate over the hob?

To what part of the suggestion does "No" relate? The humidity switch part?

So let's change that to a remotely control one or switchable on the wall near the hob.

None of it.

You can't have a normal feeble inline fan, nor have it directly over the hob.

It needs to have the required extract rate, and be positioned correctly. And if it is serving a hob, it should have the required grease filters.

I found my answer from building control:

"
The requirement for kitchen extraction is:-
30 litres per second if over the cooker
60 litres per second if elsewhere in the room.

It can be any extractor achieving these extract rates and does not have to be a hood type."

So while the grease side might be desirable it isn't mandatory.

Hope that helps somebody.
