I have just realised that the vanity basin in our bathroom has a hole about 12mm in the underside which is connected to the overflow.

It seems likely that this is used in manufacture to allow washing out of the hollow part of the basin or perhaps to vent the hollow section during firing.

Should there be a bung?

So if you fill the basin up so the overflow works, does water run out of the hole?
If so, then you need a bung  Could it be a second quality basin?
John :)

Flaws in ceramics aren't uncommon, but a hole into the overflow waste channel is a bit more of an issue
Consider coating a cork or similar in Araldite and bunging it in. A 12mm hole is too big to rely on adhesive alone.

The rubber foot of my Nordic Walking Pole is a tight fit about half way up the taper.

Will that work with silicone?

Since its only used infrequently and at very low pressure, I would competely dry the hole and then fill with silicone.

Then a day later add a second layer of silicone about 6 mm thick.
