Holes in skirting boards

Hi,

We recently had our house rewired. It is an old house and the sockets were actually on the skirting boards. The electricians have moved the sockets to the wall and we have been left with big holes in the skirting boards where the sockets used to be. They are an original feature of the house and we would like to keep them.

Please can anyone tell me the best way to fill these holes.

Many thanks !

Assuming the skirtings are softwood and will be painted you can cut pieces of 25mm thick planed timber slightly over size with tapered sides. Make sure that they are a good fit and apply woodglue all round, tap into the hole with a small hammer until the taper fits tight. After the glue has set, plane and sand flush with the skirting. Apply knotting on the joint before painting.
