Home Automation bumblers

I suspect that they are just being sensible, and therefore not including functionality/cost for which there really is not any demand (or 'need')..
This of an industry which gave us fridges with web browsing functionality...

I was rather thinking of 'ordinary' cookers, not Agas, and certainly not industrial dishwashers :)

There is at least one manufacturers of boilers who have built in "interconnectivity" built into them. The manufacturers can collect data from the boilers, faults and pending faults can be sent to the manufacturer's service department before the owner is aware there is a problem with their boiler. Where installed in social houing schemes the boilers can be linked up on a local ( wireless ? )network and chat with each other. Cannot think of any reason why the boiler in one house would ever need to talk to a boiler in a different house but "we have the technology " so let's fit it. Sounds good in the advertisments aimed at teh general public. That said it may have some useful features for landlords / social housing management.

I bought a WiFi extender, it plugs into the LAN and one logs in using a different name and password to main router, however unlike the main router which arrives with a random password these arrive all with the same password, and it is not easy to get access to the router to alter the password, so there are likely loads of Lidi customers all using the same password so if you see the name which Lidi WiFi extenders use, the chance is the default password will work.

As to if there is some one local who wants to play with your system is another thing, but it is human nature if some one does something to stop you doing something we look for a way around it. Noted this with Radio, tell some one go to 145.200 and no one bothers listening in, however tell some one "go to usual" and every other ham in range goes to see what you are saying.

OK I have a series of switches and TRV's which are controlled by a hub which in turn connects to router, which in turn connects to internet, and I am sure some one could break in and change the living room temperature, but why would they want to?

Why do people spend their time solving pointless puzzles such as Rubik's Cubes and Sudoku ? or risk their neck and empty their bank balance by climbing mountains or exploring hostile environments.

It is the sense and satisfaction of having met and overcome the challenge. Internet security is a challenge for some people.

The risk is not people looking for an intellectual challenge, changing your CH temperature for fun. The risk comes from those seeking to compromise your devices and network to obtain data such as banking passwords, or to suborn your devices into DDoS botnets.
