Any thoughts on heating please, we have a small bungalow, a multi fuel stove, looks nice but a pain, getting fuel, wood - coal, storing it, plus it seems 60% of the heat goes up the chimney. Electric is a no - no, to expensive, gas fire, central heating, or both. Thanks.

Why don't you just set fire to the bungalow, retire to the garden & warm your hands from the heat?

If your on mains gas go for full heating. Even the very efficient gas fires send about 20% of the heat up the flue which is a lot if you don't like wasting fuel. Mind you the fire is handy for occasional use.

Numbers in my head for efficiency are:

Open hearth: 10%
Non air-tight stove: 40%
Modern Insert: 60%
Air-tight stove: 80%

If you're on mains gas, go for gas ch. It's always the cheapest to run and most convenient of conventional heating systems.

If you only have one bathroom and one or two occupants, you may get away with just a combi boiler. If more bathrooms and/or people, stored hot water is best. Usually stored in a hot water cylinder in airing cupboard.
