We had a damp specialist out tonight as we have been having problems with black mould in one of our bedrooms.
He went round the house with his dampness machine thingy (sorry don't know what it's called) He checked the outside of the house and pointed out some cracks on the wall and some pointing work that needed done. Nothing major he said, basically we have some condensation problems, get the cracks and pointing sorted and buy a Home Vent Unit, cost of this unit approx £1000 :(
Has anyone ever heard of these units ? If you have, are they worth investing £1000 in?

TIA

They are becoming more popular nowadays and basically consist of a large venting unit which draws in fresh air and circulates it around your house meaning there is a constant movement of air giving less chance of condensation occuring. Some even have a heating element to distribute warm air but from reports I've had they do get expensive to run with the heater on. A friend of mine has fitted one in one of his rentals and recommended I do it to some of mine and he is reasonably impressed with it. Sounds like a lot of money and you could shop around for a better price but maybe you could look at cheaper ways to minimise condensation first such as vents on windows, a good fan with an over-run in the kitchen and bathroom and avoiding drying clothes on radiators etc.

Hi Dazb
Thank you very much for your reply. We are doing all the things you have suggested plus we had a dehumidifier in the bedroom concerned which has removed approx 8 pints of water from the room over 10 days.
Thank you for your advice.

A positive pressure fan is a solution for persistent and extensive mould/condensation problems and should not really be considered (or proposed) for limited condensation

Read the various threads on here about condensation and mould and there is a massive thread about this type of fan - search for lofty

It may be relatively easy for you to deal with this quickly and simply at no cost just by altering your use of heating, ventilation or extraction of steam.

These units can be bought for as little as £350, and then you will need fitting and maybe some other vents fitted. But £1000 is a bit too much

Hi Woody, I found the "Lofty" thread, I think we will continue with the obvious things first. Also carry on using the dehumidifier for another wee while.

Thanks for all your advice.
