OK - so we are going to go for option "B" to make sure that fixes the problem. BG are doing this as part of the homecare - so no cost. They won't fit a new tank. So, if it works then I will have a new tank installed next year - a much tidier solution.
I tried switching off the supply to the tank as suggested - worked !!
I'll report back tomorrow....
