Hi, wondering if anybody can help with a problem I've come across?

I've just bought an old bungalow and found an issue with the central heating / hot water. When I set the heating to "off" and the hot water to "on" the radiators come on.

Now a little bit of research and I discovered the problem could be the mid position valve not working. So I had a play with the moveable arm at the bottom and found it has no resistance at all, it's just completely loose. When I turn the CH/HW on I can hear the motor trying to turn but the arm does not budge.

My question is, as a relative novice when it comes to heating systems, is this something I can investigate further and fix myself? Or would it be easier to get an engineer in to fix?

I would rather save money and under guidance I would give most jobs a go, but I don't want to make anything worse and have to pay more in the long run.

Any advice would be awesome. I will update with a picture of the valve soon.o

If you cut the mains power to the entire central heating system with the main isolator or at the fuse board, does the valve spring closed so the lever now has resistance?

If it does there is likely a wiring problem, if it doesn't and stays as it is, either the valve body or actuator are stuck/faulty.

If it's a Drayton - change the whole thing (valve and head) for a Honeywell!
