Can anyone help me, I have had hot water and no heating for a week now (it's been snowing today and v.cold). I have a potterton Performa 28 combi that is about 3 yrs old and so far have had 3 plumbers out all stating different problems! I am tearing my hair out wondering if anyone actually knows their stuff. The unit kept shutting down due to what seemed to be an overheat, the water temp was shooting upto 80 in a matter of minutes.
The first plumber changed the diverter valve to no avail then the pump (but then discovered only a new motor/turbine was fitted to the original pump body). He then suggested that both heat exchangers were the problem and he should replace them at an extortionate price!

As not convinced got second opinion from plumber who dissasembled the pump and found auto air vent causing vapour locks with consequent loss of pumping, advised complete new pump, as he couldn't do work for another week, we went to a third plumber to fit the pump, he disagreed with this diagnostic and although replaced complete pump we are still not getting heat in all our rads? System is not switching off though now and have hot water, plumber suggests air lock or sludge, however our system is only 3 yrs old, have bled rads, clear water and no air?? Please can anyone help with any other suggestions, I feel like everyone I call out, although corgi registered, just keeps guessing and in the meantime I still don't have central heating! :( :(

Its not clear to me exactly what your symptoms really are from what you have said.

What is clear is that you have had three incompetent engineers!

You need to find someone clever enough to find the fault and fix it.

Sounds to me as if the system is dirty and the plate HE is blocked and that the diverter is seized in the DHW position. All very easy for a competent person to diagnose and fix.

would the plate HE be blocked when my boiler is only 3 years old & what is likely to have caused this?

You say the hot water is working OK and you have a problem with the heating.

If the hot water performance is OK then the pump is almost certainly working OK and the plate heat exchanger is not blocked.

If the radiators are not getting hot but the boiler temperature rises up to maximum there is a problem with water flow in the radiator circuit.

You also mention the boiler is not turning off, it is posible the hot water flow switch is stuck on and hence reason for no heating.

If this is not the case then start by checking flow/return islating valves are fully open, the return filter is not blocked.

hot water flow switch is stuck on
Seems likely to me too - water in the switch??. They second one on the board at the moment

could tony be wrong...............................
