Hot water supply from tank to taps.

Hello all,
I have been in the loft and found that the valve on the hot water supply is jammed open with green crystaline deposts around the neck (its a gate valve)

Can I free it up or is it best replaced it with a ball valve?

What's the best way to clean calcium deposits off the pipes /olives to fit a new valve?

I'd replace it with a full bore lever valve. You can clean the deposits off with wire wool, and use a little jointing compound if you're re-using olives.
