Help! I've just started using my father's old WD61 - it seemed OK but there has just been a load bang and smoke from it at the end of a drying cycle, (a double sheet and a couple of pillow cases). I've taken off the top and the wires all look OK, but the motor is very hot still and I think that is where the smokey smell is coming from. Can the motors on these machines been replaced?

They can be replaced might be worth just checking the motor brushes and the rf capacitor (on the inside near the supply lead entry point)

If the motor has blown it could have caused further damage so you may need to look at the timer as well.

Thanks Leccy, I've taken the back off the machine and can see the unit you mention has exploded its innards out. You call the part a capacitor, but I'm finding it difficult to source a new one. Is it the same thing as a mains suppressor? It looks similar. Another site has a Capacitor F/motor but it is a lot more expensive than the other thing. I don't want to order the wrong part! Can you help?

Yes it also called an RF filter amongst other things

The machine will actually run with it by passed at least to test if there is any more damage.

Other wise a 47 micro farad capacitor (RF Filter) will do, maplins, local repair/spares shop

What a quick reply, you're obviously not out Trick or Treating!
That's very useful, I'll give it a go, and thanks for the possible suppliers.

Have just tried, with the help of my less electricity phobic partner to circumvent the capacitor to test the machine and yes! it works. A very handy hint and many, many thanks for your advice.

You will get interferance with some electrical equipment with the filter removed but at least you can get to use it while you replace the filter.

Hello again, I've had problems locating the correct mains suppressor for the machine as Hotpoint are out of stock at the moment. Another supplier has offered me a universal 6 microfarad capacitor for the time being. Would this work? It looks as though the pairs of connectors are just sitting on top of this capacitor rather than enter into a circuit as in the original one and my partner is doubtful about trying it. Any ideas?

No that is a motor start capacitor not a mains filter,

try a local spares shop, we always have 2nd hand ones on the van and in the workshop in case.

Hi Leccy, just to update you - a local repair shop took a mains suppressor of a dead machine out the back for me, it's now connected and the machine is busy working it's way throught the mound of dirties. So for just a few pounds and your help we are back to normal. Many thanks!
