HOTPOINT (ULTIMA) WASHER/DRYER (ELECTRONIC)

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help us. We moved to this house which had a washer/dryer. It is switched on etc and the pipes are connected to the water etc. They are also swtched on. When you press the on button, it comes up with "please choose programme" which we do. Then, when we go to press the "start" button, nothing happens. It does not "beep" either. Dont want to call someone out maybe too expensive. Any ideas?
