I've had this for 2 years i bought it 2nd hand.

However it's recently developed a burning/electrical smell that has made me very nervous!

There are no filters on this machine so I wouldn't know how to clear and bits of fluff that has possibly built up? Also there is a black cap on the back of the machine (on the top towards the back on the metal plate) this has always been kept on the machine but today I took it off whilst the dryer was running and there is a tiny little pipe sticking out and water was coming out of it and going back in the machine! I have no idea what this little pipe is (probably about 1 cm wide) should this black cap be kept on or off?

Also since I've had the dryer although it's always worked there's always been a buzzing noise when the dryer has been in operation. I can reduce/stop this by putting my pressure on the timer dial and pushing it upwards. My head is telling me to get rid of this thing but as it still works i don't want to waste money.

Please can anyone help with what the problem might be? I'm intrigued to know the purpose of the little spout/pipe thing on the back is too and whether i should take the cap off or keep it on!

Thanks :)

Your mc is 14 years old. The filter is at the back of the drum. It's a black cup with a spring clip round it. The black cap on the rear with the pipe is a flusher for the condenser. Put cap back on and leave it alone. Check the round mains surpressor in the back right hand corner for burn marks. Also the buzzing noise is poss the two strews that hold the timer in are loose.

Hi rocks, thanks for your reply.

I haven't took the back off but get the impression it could be the mains suppressor around the back (where the elec supply feeds in?) it's quite warm around this area when the drier is on and the electric wire has tiny scorch marks on it and the main wire cable has been stripped a little to exposure the
main wire inside. (I am keeping a close eye on this and only operating machine when at home and awake!!) Still the electrical smell only occurs when the dryer is on, not the washer. If it was a problem with the mains supply, why is it only apparent. when the dryer in on?

It sounds like fluff is burning in the dryer heater. You could remove the alloy heater housing from the top of the tub and clean it out. If you have space you could buy a separate dryer and keep the Hotpoint just for washing.
