We have a 2nd hand (about 2 years old) hotpoint first edition 800 WM 51 machine, that wont heat up the water even on a 90 degree wash it is still stone cold. Any ideas whether there is a quick fix solution to this problem or are we looking at buying a new machine?

There is also a scratchy noise when the drum turns that started a few months ago - could the two problems be related?

There possibly could be a connection. the heater is positioned at the bottom between the inner drum and the outer tub the scraping noise could be something that has penetrated the holes in the inner tub and catching the heater when rotating the inner drum (bra wire is the favourite)this could have blown your heating element initially so this would have to be checked out when replacing the element.

I just had a technician come and see my Hotpoint Wm51. I have the same problem with the water heating. It might not be the heater as mine proved to be working. After eliminating every other possible cause we reached the programmer. It seems that the current is no passing through it on its way to the heater. It might be an easy fix for an electrician, at least I hope so.
