Hotpoint WM62 Washer won't turn on

Hi, our Hotpoint WM62 Washer won't turn on. There is power to the socket and the plug fuse is fine. Does anyone know what the possible problem could be? I suspect it might be the timer/ control unit but don't want to buy one of those without first eliminating cheaper possibilities like the power switch, mains suppressor (what does this do & how do I test it?) or any other item that could cause the problem (like does the door have a safety sensor?). Any help much apprecaited.

door lock poss faulty,did you have to slam door shut the last few weeks to start it

also check on /off switch for melted terminals
