I have a hotpoint WT 741 and when switched on all the lights and display start flashing. Eventually it will stop and it can be programmed as normal. Some times it will start flashing during the cycle but continues to complete the cycle ok. I have removed both PCBs and checked for dry joints, cleaned the edge connectors and pushed all other sensor connectors on. it's most annoying as it can take quite some time before it can be programmed. Could it be a bad connection on the IDC connectors as they are only push fit joints. Or do i have a damaged main pcb

Thanks leccy,

Yes very similar problems. I noticed today when the machine was running that when the motor was stopped the display was ok. As soon as the motor or speed control came in the display and lights went mad. Sounds like the capacitor may have failed. Going away for a week so i'll look at that as soon as i return. Keep you posted. :) :)

Fitted the capacitor tonight and works perfectly.
Thanks for the link.

Thanks Leccy758 for your link.
I did change the capacitor (for 1000uF - the closest capacity I found in Maplin that day). Works
The only thing I had to do after I switched it back on, the washing machine has been constantly on test mode. I googled how to leave the test mode:

I followed Leccy758's link and my washer is now fixed.

I have posted my thanks over there....
Just signed up to say thanks to HarryM1BYT, and all the others that confirmed the fix.

I had a Hotpoint WT741 with all lights flashing.

I just replaced C17 with a 1000uf 16V 105degree capacitor, 59p from Maplin. Now back up and running.

Cheers!

... but wanted to say thanks here too.

Thanks for the info guys. Might want to check the incoming suppressor/filter also. I found that C17 is bulgin and has puked a bit but I also see the live terminal on the suppressor has got really hot and melted the plastic plug on the harness and the suppressor itself.

:D Replaced C17 with a 1000 uF 25V cap. Also got me a new Supressor and Harness. Working like a charm. Cap cost me nothing. I had a whole pack. Supressor and Harness cost me about £35. Still cheaper than a call out and being charged double the price for the parts.

I've just signed up to this site to thank everyone that posted/replied on this thread and the one that Leccy758 suggested right at the top.

I've had a Hotpoint Ultima WT741 since 2008. For the past few months, every single light has been flashing on the front, including the time/spin speed display. (The machine still worked, though it would sometimes take an age of holding/constantly pressing the start button for a cycle to start. It was impossible to implement settings like half load or the delay.) Yesterday, I was ready to give in and either purchase a reconditioned machine off gumtree or buy a new one, when as a last resort I stumbled across this thread. I am so glad that I did!

After some initial confusion of taking apart various bits of the washing machine, I found the correct location for the circuit board. From the back of the machine, it is in the bottom left. Remove the plastic cover that goes across the lower part of the back of the machine. Then there is a screw on the left of the machine holding the plastic casing of the circuit board in place. With quite a bit of maneuvering, I managed to get the board out of the back of the machine without disconnecting any of the wires. I removed the plastic casing and located C17 on the board. The capacitor looked slightly domed at the top, though I wouldn't have noticed it if I had not known to look for it.

A trip to a local hardware store for a soldering iron and solder (£12) and then to maplin for a 1000uf 25v capacitor (58p), and then I was back. I haven't soldered in over 15 years since tech classes at school. It was easy enough to remove the existing capacitor. I then needed my girlfriend to hold the new capacitor in place whilst i soldered it in. Amazingly, it worked first time, no more flashing lights, one washing machine working as new, and one proud girlfriend :) I guess that the point of this massive post, apart from the enthusiastic "thank you!!" is to say that even for an un-confident novice such as myself, this was a simple enough fix, and hopefully it will give anyone else the confidence to attempt the same!

I have the same problem as everyone else but I have noticed that the capacitor that failed was C65 on my circuit board. This is not the original controller though. Same value capacitor though with a domed roof so off to Maplin to get another.
