Oh what fun - Hastings Direct...

It's coming up to renewal time, HD wrote to me, including my renewal proposal, and a letter saying they had tried to email me the renewal, but it had bounced - well it would do, I no longer have access to that old address.

I then logged into my online account, and looked for some way to change my contact email address, there was no such option. You can change the login password, but not the email address.

I then emailed them from my new email address, included all my details, and simply change my contact email address. They have just replied, to say I have to download a smartphone app, login, and contact them via the app, to change the address.

I've written back, saying I don't do smart phone apps, can they just change my email address to my current one, that if they are unable to deal with that simple task, I will renew my cover with another provider.

Have you tried using a web browser to log in, a lot of the time there is a version of the app you can use without a smartphone app.

This is not a typical scenario, give them a ring on their support line to sort it out. Until they've confirmed that you are who you say you are to their satisfaction they should be ignoring all of the changes you are asking for after all.

Even asking them to cancel your cover should be ignored until/unless they confirm that the emails claiming to be you are really from you. So if you get hacked off and decide to leave them then I'd check your direct debits to make sure you're not still being charged.
