A friend in Manch had a roofing contractor try to inspect his roof. But it would not go above 8m.

He said he was more than 3 miles from the airport.

But today he had a flyer from the airport showing their safeguarding map which included his location.

So how can the airport interfere with a drone's flight?

It will be software based I think. It will be a geofence, so from the GPS co-ordinates the drone knows its near the airport and the software will prevent it going above 8m.

When we wanted to inspect the roof where I worked, I had to phone air traffic control and give my phone number, while my colleague used his phone to control the drone.

Should the air ambulance had been scrambled, then I would get a phone call to say down the drone.

There are exceptions, the Mac loop for example, that is simply a no-fly zone for drones. The miliary is not going to tell you when they are flying.

It does sometimes seem daft, I know with the camera club, pictures taken with drones needed the permission to fly with them to enter them into competitions, but pictures taken from a light aircraft did not come under the same rules.

However, I have never applied for a drone licence, it was my colleague who had the licence, and it seems this is all explained when one takes the course to get the licence.

There’s an app called drone assist tgat shows you where you can’t fly etc.

AIUI The Drone Assist owners have gone into administration, so all info from it should currently be taken with a pinch of salt and double checked.
