Varnished Floor Join

Don't varnish a floor in two halves and don't put final coat on a night in artificial light!
OK, so first this is all my fault as I had to do our living room in two halves (long story) but where the halves joined I tried to get natural end of floorboard joins where I could.
I also applied the final coat last night, when tired, with a crying toddler upstairs needing my attention, so was not 'on the ball'.
This morning I come down to... an OK job, but there are six floor boards where there is an obvious over varnished join of about 3-4 inches wide. To add to the problem it's in the one part of the floor where a) you can see from any angle walking into the room and b) won't/can't be covered by a rug!
So, my question is: is there a way I can sand back these joins - using a 120+ paper - feathering back a few inches either side of the built up join, or will I have to sand the whole boards back and start again?
Any other solutions/suggestions greatly appreciated...
