How do I cover pebbledash on internal walls?

Hi. I’m a complete DIY novice. I have 7-8 square metres of pebble dashed internal walls that I want to make smooth before having a friend put up shelves for me. Through online research I’ve found a product called OCDC which I think could be used, but I’d need to pay someone to apply it, and can’t afford to. Is it possible to buy a large sheet of plasterboard or something that could be screwed on to the wall, and then fix the shelves to the wall via the board? Or are there other options? Advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Simplest would be to glue up a couple of sheets of plasterboard.The shelves would be fixed to wall not board .
