How do I 'do' pointing?

Hi,

I'm hoping to have a go at re-pointing some of my walls on my 1897 semi. I believe that the current mortar is lime based?

Could someone point (excuse the pun) me in the right direction for a step by step guide - tools, technique, materials etc.

I guess once you get the hang of it, it's just personal time so I can save myself quite a bit on labour costs.
