How do I improve a new concrete garage floor ?

The floor in my new garage doesnt have a very good finish. Concrete was poured and has dried with a pretty rough finish.
I want to have a smooth floor which I can paint with a resin floor paint.
What should I do with the existing floor to make it good enough ?
Grind ? use some sort of screed ? self levelling compound ? or something else ?
I havn't done any of the above before although but Ibelieve I have medium to good DIY ability.
Can anyone with good concrete flooring knowledge advise me please ?
many thanks, George

What do you use it for? Do you park a car in it?

A leveling compound would work but probably not take the weight of a car. I am not sure a screed would be up to the job either as it may also not deal to well with the loading on such small areas as just the wheels. There are epoxy based screeds which go down at around 10mm i think and are very hard wearing and strong but expensive i imagine.
