Thereare probably more than 50 different rooflights, which includes Velux and the other manufacturers, and all use different mechanisms.

Depending on your roof pitch you may need to change the 'spring clips' that form part of the hinge mechanism - the standard clips are only rated to a certain pitch.
My windows are in a 16 degree roof and I had the same problem. Velux sent me the clips free of charge and now the windows stay open (although not very far).
