How do I repair door handle?

When I pulled my door handle, the screw that holds it in place gave way, created a hole in the back of the door

Because the hole is now larger than before, i cannot screw the handle back in place

What is the best way to repair the handle

Ideally, I do not want to replace the gold handle

The repair job needs to be strong as the door gets pulled open many times a day

Could you not use a washer on the screw at back of door.
