How do these work?

They are used in conjunction with Speedfit fittings (older non-locking style only I think) to prevent the release flange (or whatever it's called) from being pushed in (for example by pressing against a joist). I presume they clip over the flange. Shouldn't be necessary in most cases.
 
Which type of speedfit fitting are you using? If the newer type with locking nuts, they won't fit.
 
Thanks chris, the diagrams show exactly how i assumed they would work, somebody mentioned new type fittings, my ones come from screwfix...deffo not compatable either way...cheers anyway
