Evening,

We have an old Ideal standard FF with a large water tank upstairs. I can’t put the heating on without the hot water being on so I was thinking. I think I understand that when you put the CH on (with the water of course) the radiator water pipes run through the tank and heat up the rad water? If this is correct then would it cost much more to have the CH on at the same time as the HW please?

It’s the original boiler from when the house was built in 1995 ish and the only reason I haven’t replace it is because I am waiting for more gov subsidies/incentives or it breaks , whichever is sooner.

Cheers.

Yes, it would obviously cost more, than the HW on it's own, because the radiators would be cooling the water returned to the boiler - heat which the boiler has to burn, to make up for.

Nope the two waters never meet, the rads are heated by the gas boiler, the HW is heated by the gas boiler via a coil inside the HW Cylinder
