Building a porch roof above front door. How high from ground level should the wall plate be fixed onto wall.
Using 2x 150mm timber posts on the front. Do I skew nail the top of column to the front of wall plate,or is there an attachment I could buy.

In these instances, it is better to mock-up a rafter to the desired pitch and work from there.

From this dummy rafter you can work out positions of all the items involved in the roof.

We would typically use a purlin arrangement for the bottom plate then support this off either gallows, masonry pillars or posts.

Depending upon span this purlin can be anything from say a 6" x 2"up to whatever i.e 9" x 4" for example. The rafter would then be b/m'd onto this purlin and fixed to a pole plate on the wall (high end).

Your roof pitch will be decided according to what tiles you wish to use, how much pitching room you have and (most importantly) what looks right. I've lost count of front porches that just look totally ridiculous.

We would connect the top of the post to any purlin using an angle bracket.
