How high simple gravel patio?

Plan to put down gravel patio, weed barrier plus cheap stones. Have a pile of sand left over from building work which I could use to level area. I assume highest part should be just below air vent? Or is lower needed? Long term I'll probably pave it but need to go cheap and cheerful for now.

I would be tempted to dig down a bit more and put down a good few inches of scalpings. If you compact it when it's damp it makes quite a good hard surface, and you can then use it as a base for your paving.
 
Bottom of brick below vent so you will need to remove some material so you can finish there.
