Don't be tempted to use DOT 5, it's like an ugly bird, once you try it there is no going back. Also ABS systems don't like it and it can cause the pistons to corrode up in the master cylinder. It's best left for racing cars

DOT 5 doesn't absorb water

DOT 5.0 (Silicone) is only used in a handful of applications.

DOT 5.1 is the upgraded DOT4.

Can't understand why they labelled it like they did.

I've repaired a fair few brake systems where people have used DOT 5.0 (Silicone) in a DOT 4 system and it completely destroys all the seals, very expensive job!.

God forbid if you took a car ABS unit out miss-using DOT 5.0, you're talking thousands £ to sort out.

Even on DOT 5.0 the fluid weeps out of the lines (worked on a few track bikes with specific breaking systems).

DOT4 discolours with age, starts off clear ends up like gravy!.

There's the boiling point issue with water contaminated brake fluid but also the internal corrosion of the brake caliper bore and pistons etc. A car just doing deliveries at 60mph tops won't boil it's brakes but will be slowly corroding it's calipers.

This brake fluid is well past it's best, if it has a noticeable colour it's ready for changing (apart from ATE Blue/ Red etc).

Just to reiterate you must be 120% sure before using DOT 5.0 (Silicone) fluid on ANY vehicle.

All US military vehicles are running DOT5 fluid, cutting maintenance for vehicles in storage.
My bikes run DOT5 (having been completely flushed and set up for it)

You can't mix it with anything else, but it preserves paintwork.
