I'm going to be paving my driveway when the weather picks up and I have about 85 sq mtrs to cover. If I want 200mm of stone to go down, how many tonnes would I need to order and should it be delivered and compacted in 2No. separate 100mm layers.

Thanks for the response

why 200mm thick?

Why, is that going to be a bit too deep. What's recommended for a standard driveway for cars parking on it. I don't want to run the risk of it sinking, particularly at the entrance to the driveway where the gates will be located, from cars driving over the same area every day. Next doors has done exactly this but I don't know how much stone they put down when it was laid

you will need a couple of 15 tonne loads at least.

Is there a calculation or rule of thumb for working out the amount ie 1 tonne of compacted stone will cover x metres squared when laid at a specific thickness

for any degree of success, not only does the stone need to be well compacted but you will need a good thickness of sub-layer and top layer tarmac.

edge restraints will also need to be sturdy to stop spread, another cause of sinking.

the cobble type paviors allow for one of the weaker paving bonds (brick course bond) as opposed to regular sized 200x100mm paviors which allow the herringbone bond, which is one of the strongest.

it is difficult to prevent sinking whereby tyre traffic is concentrated in one area. compacting the stone in layers is a good idea.

it is also a good idea to have a sub-layer of concrete in the area where the traffic is most concentrated, i.e. the narrow entrance to a driveway or garage.

there is also a strong road geotextile which can be placed between the sub-soil and the stone, this can also prevent localised sinkage.

hey Mr M, what is currently on the drive? or if its newly created have you already dug it out for 200mm?

The drive currently consists of two specific areas, divided down the middle. One half is grassed, the other half I think, is just a top coat of tarmac, laid on paving flags which was completed by the previous owners before we moved in.

I haven't started the job yet so I haven't dug out for 200mm thick of stone

What thickness is recommended for a standard driveway for cars parking on it or at worst my Escort van, fully loaded up.
