Removing the valve tail raises a risk to the radiator that there's no virtue in taking, so I wouldn't change it unless it's a union type and the new valve is nut-n-olive, or vice versa.
And BTW, LSX seems to be the best modern joint compound to stick onto an olive.
I agree, removing the valve tail can be opening a rusty can of worms, but if it does start to turn without too much stress, then it's a quickie to change.
LSX is that clear stuff that sets a bit like silicon. I don't find that it sticks the olive on with any force. Can't get Boss White everywhere like one used to.
And I only use PTFE tape on a threaded joint, so not a 'brethren'...except when opening a drippy drain cock...
Has anyone ever tried soldering polypipe?
Maybe it will melt into a watertight seal with end feed fitting?
