I’d not use fishing line, I’d worry it would slip under the staples. Basically, anything that won’t rot and that you can staple or otherwise fix in place. I confess, when I wrote “baler twine” I actually meant “bale strapping” but either would be fine.
funnily enough this is exactly what I am working on as well. I highly recommend to do a proper job even though it is pain to crawl. Previous owner of my place (or their builder) thought it would be best to just dump a lot of building material into the void to hold up the fibreglass wool.. I am currently clearing everything out and using light netting to hold everything back up. Empty spots I use some leftover rockwool slabs which stay in place w/out (but I will still add netting).
I am using this and it works perfectly fine. Having a cordless staple gun makes this much easier (I purchased on solely for this).
