How old would you estimate my CU is?

A fuse not blowing for years is no guarantee of safety. In fact a blown fuse will indicate a good path to earth should any appliance become faulty. Visual means nothing and the only way to tell the earth is continuous is with a loop test. Personally I wouldn't live in a house without RCD/RCBO protection, but then that's my personal preference (belt and braces)

How many years did you live in one and not die?

It's not as if it's a major hazard, is it? It's all a matter of risk compensation. In some parts of the world they'd be happy to have the CU you have there...

That's my personal opinion. At least an RCD covers any fault to earth. How can any say that box is safe just because no fuses blow? Let's be honest how many people ever bother to have their electrics tested. Now we have a cheap piece of technology its right to use it. The answer like a previous poster says is 'maybe'. Can you tell from a picture that there is a good earth path?
I would always advocate RCD protection its cheap and effective.

There are no earth bonds to gas or water.
There should be, so you should either get someone to do this, or fit them yourself.

As the last 'inspection' probably consisted of a so called property surveyor having a quick glance at the exterior of the fusebox, a proper inspection should be done. Even if the last one was done properly (it wasn't), it was well over 10 years ago so another is due anyway.

This way you will find out if any items need repair, rather than assuming all is well.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I understand what is being said here and I would honestly to call a good electrician round tomorrow to inspect if I could afford it and I'd love to get the whole place rewired.

As with everything nowadays, its just about money - I'm sure some of you can understand how things are when money is tight - thanks Mr Osborne. When I have some spare cash floating around though, sorting the electrics out will most definitely be at the top of my priority list.

For the time being though, it's new car time! Found out a day ago that my piston rings are worn - no point repairing it as it will cost more than the car is worth.

THink you should be thanking Mr Brown for blowing all the money.

I've completely lost interest in politics since the coalition came into office. Everything they come out with seems to cost me more and more money; take some money from the wealthy for once for gods sake.
