how soon will Trump back down over tariffs

Scared of upsetting Trump behave they have already spoken out

This is what I meant earlier by working backwards. The Trump team have used trade deficits to perform a calculation which gives a figure for each country. In the case of Taiwan, they say the figure is 64%. They have then claimed that Taiwan must be imposing tariffs and other trade barriers which make it 64% more difficult for the USA to export to Taiwan, than the other way around. They have started from the presumption that because there is a massive trade deficit, then Taiwan must be behaving very unfairly. What they have neglected to consider, however, is the most obvious explanation for the large trade deficit. Which is that the USA doesn't actually produce very much which Taiwan actually needs or wants to buy.

NO just an army and navy and weapons that is protecting it from a chinese invasion

oh and by the way the US is Taiwan's 2nd biggest trading partner

True, but irrelevant to the point being made.

However, it definitely might be part of the bigger picture. With some countries, the tariffs might not actually be about trade at all. Nobody knows what Trump really wants from this, because so far he hasn't been clear. In the case of Taiwan, maybe he wants them to spend more on defence and/or buy more US weapons.

Ooops, that dont look so good........

Clearly they do or they wouldnt be their second biggest trading partner

It's called poetic license, Mr Pedant.

There is actually a very important and interesting discussion to be had here.

But I officially give up!

That in itself means nothing. A small amount of a little isn't very much. Maybe they don't import much from anyone.

He (MrT) goes on about making america great again, returning them to manufacturing etc.
But where are all the american steel plants? the manufacturing plants that they will need to make the products they buy from china?

All closed down.
Everything they use generally has a microchip in it, all made in Tiawan so they are going to pay more for them.
Will they really be able to rebuild and restart the manufacturing plants in the next 3 years?

Might be good for my job if they open up lots of food manufacturing plants.
Not so good for american drinkers, their beer is sheite (AIUI)

Brexit has not affected my day to day life in any way whatsoever , yep project fear
Ah yes, the mot defence: "Brexit hasn't affected me so all's well with the world."
Take off your rosy specs (they don't suit you) and have a wider look at the world around you.
This limited perception you persist with affects your judgement.

Stop making up lies - you've been listening to Notch for too long. I'm pretty sure I have never said "alls well with the world". I said Brexit hast affected me. It’s a statement of fact. Oh, wait. I take that back. I might have to pay a fiver for a 3 year European visa some time in the future.

Aye, and the implication being if it hasn't affected you then all is well with the world and Brexit is a success, despite reports from independent bodies to the contrary. Do you get your rose tinted specs on prescription?

New hats available, same Chinese made hats as before but 35% dearer

Could you give 3 examples of how Brexit has affected you personally? Not from what you read on Google but that has actually affected you?
