how to block up ridge tile chimney vent?

Hi. I am in the process of removing my gas fire, and will be blocking up the fireplace.
It is a type 2 precast flue, with a ridge vent.

Can anyone tell me how I should block off the ridge vent?

Can I do this from within the loft space by dropping the metal flue pipe off and reaching up from the inside?
