What's the best method of cleaning decking in a rear garden? It's not brand new decking - it's been there for 3-4 years and has been occasionally cleaned by the current owners. I'll be wanting to give it a good clean but it covers around 75% of the garden so is a substantial amount of decking that will need cleaning.

Alternatively, what sort of companies specialise in maintaining/renovating/cleaning decking?

If you are going to use a pressure washer, use the correct spray setting, or you will ruin the deck.

Hi Taz777 (we like the sevens, don't we :D )

My deck was starting to look grubby so I did a search on cleaning methods and found that Oxygen Bleach could be the way to go. I did a fairly gentle power wash clean to the deck but honestly it did not do much.

So I bought some Sodium Percarbonate (oxygen bleach) on ebay at very reasonable price and it arrived today.

I mixed 8 tablespoons in a gallon of hot water and applied it to the deck using a garden sprayer (manual pump). Left it 15-20 minutes before using a deck brush quite vigorously. The crud that came off is unbelievable. It's hard work but I did it 6-8 boards at a time then rinsed with a garden hose on a pretty average setting. Took me most of today to do the deck which is about 20sq metres (but I get breathless easily) .

The boards look to be back to the original colour and I can't wait to see it when it dries.

I may do another clean before applying more Liberon decking oil, which is my original finish.

I really can't believe how good this oxygen bleach stuff is and environmentally friendly to boot.

Way to go for me. I hope this is helpful
Jim

Edit - I used 3 gallons of solution in total.

Hi,

I need to clean my decking but my problem is small leaves in the grooves of the decking, I want to use a brush and dust pan but the leaves go under the pan because of the grooves. Is there a special pan or shovel you can buy that fits into the grooves so the leaves can be cleaned up, if so could you post me a link.

Cheers

I was just reading about cleaning my deck and saw this

Worth a read as the guy slipped on dirty decking and ended up in hospital!!

I used a vacuum cleaner on mine once it was dry and before sealing it.
