Hi,
Apologies if this question is a repeat but couldn't find anything specific to our needs.

We've just installed oak kitchen units which are untreated and I'm now not sure whether they should be varnished, oiled or waxed (or how to do this)/ also whether the outside should be treated differently to the insides & shelves.

We have two small kids so don't have a great deal of time on our hands for constant maintenance (we're used to oiling wood flooring every 6 uh hem, ok every 12 months which is straightforward enough but anything too complicated/ intricate is unlikely to get done).

We love the look of the untreated wood so don't want anything that makes the units glossy looking or changes the colour too much but also need them to be as water/ stain resistant as possible so figure a compromise needs to be had.

Could someone explain what options we ought to look at and how difficult each process would be (I am completely useless but will have to do it ourselves as the kitchen budget ran out a long time ago...). Also, please provide brand names as I'll have to get down to a hardware store to pick something up and its going to be much easier if I just have a brand to look out for.

THANK YOU.

Danish oil is simple solution, easy ,quick to apply and if you don't like it you can still wax or varnish over, seals timber and make it stain resistant.
