Hi all, i am in the middle of moving earth to create tiers in my garden. How do you make the flat areas as level as possible? any tips on this as string and a level will work on small runs but my garden spans over 12 meters!

Thanks

are you building it up or excavating down?

how level do you need to get it, and what will be the final finish surface going down?

are you using an excavator, rotovator or by hand?

are you importing any levelling soil to put on under the lawn?

Doing it by hand at the moment and yes, i'll have to get some top soil at least for the lower part as i have it the clay :( how deep should the top soild be for the grass?

Do you think a rotavator (not sure what an excavator is, sorry) will be a worth while hire? The turf will be relayed free of charge by the landscapers as it's a new house and there is drainge to be put in, which is why i am doing this now.

Cheers

Hijacking an old post here.

I'm after the same (and Thermo, I really am trying here to cut down on the posts!)

I'm raising a part of my garden, and on advice I'm using concrete slabs as a retainer down one slide as the gardne not only slopes away from the house, but also away to the right a little. So my plan is to have it level from side to side, with a reduced slope away from the house.

I've got a few thing left to do as you can see, and not sure if I start by vreating the step in the middle; bu getting the garden level first and then digging the step out; or what???

your step is the fixed point, since i assume your building it from sleepers so it will end up at the same height as the wall. Once youve got that in place you can virtually level it off by eye.
