How to glue 9mm wooden handle into 13mm stone hole in pestle

This is a small and very old pestle. It was glued with some kind of gum or resin which is now crumbling.

How can I securely re-attach the wooden handle? The 'peg' is diameter 9mm, fitting into a stone hole of 13mm.

Its a bit of a 'clattery' fit that one Mary.....consider filling the pestle side with some epoxy resin glue such as Araldite, pushing the handle in place, supporting it with tape and leaving it somewhere warm for a couple of days?
It could be a good move to scrape away some of the original adhesive too - without making the handle any smaller!

you could make a small slot on the end and place a small wedge there, so when brought together with adhesive the end will be spread for a closer fit.

Thanks Burnerman, epoxy glue it is. Think I'll use Milliput.
Thanks Foxhole, I think a wedge would crack the wood, it looks very dry and the pestle was bought by my aunt about 50 years ago.

Milliput isn't really a glue - it's more of a filler. I would get my hands on some strong epoxy resin.

Araldite or similar would serve you better - JB Weld is strong but is grey in colour. You probably want a slow cure epoxy as well as they tend to be stronger.
