How to identify the incoming supply

Hello. The surveyor from the network has been out and showed me where to dig for the supply cable. But I didn't ask what it would look like as I thought I'd know when I see it. But It would be good if someone could give a clue. Also the likely depth.

There are many different types of supply cable. The type used will depend on the DNO and the age. Modern ones are PVC sleeved. Older ones could be something like pitch impregnated hessian around a lead outer.
The best way to find out what yours looks like is to see the cable where it enters the property just below the service head. (With the supply fuse). Then you’ll know what you are looking for!

As for buried depth. It’s anyone’s guess. The DNO work to their own regulations, much based on risk assessment. I’ve seen DNO cables under the drive to a house less than a foot deep. So, dig very very carefully!

I found it about 17 inches down. Black and you can read 'electric cable' then something like 1100 volts written on it.
So now I have to find the water pipe! Cheers.

Side extension. Gas is a problem also. Sgn guessed where that pipe was and they weren't as accurate as you'd think. It's been over a week now and still no word when they're coming.

Well, the gas and electric because the meters have to be moved and the gas pipe winds it's way through the new footings. Hopefully the water is ok as it only goes through the front of the foundations.
