How to match mortar when repointing

Hi all, we have recently had cladding taken off the front wall of the house. We have been left with this strange pattern of mortar. What you see on the pic is repeated 4 times horizontally. It's clear this has been repointed at some point but why only these bricks?

More importantly does anyone know how best to repoint this and get a good match? Could this be a DIY job?
