I need to hire a plasterer to plaster over my artex ceiling above my stairs and landing area to give a smooth finish

I've been offered the services of a mates brother but would rather avoid simply because it would be uncomfortable if I was not satisfied with the job so I've done a search through the yellow pages for my local area.

I'm going to ask for references but I'd also like some info on how the job should be done so I can get a feel for whether they know what they're doing.

Can anyone tell my how the job should be done for a good quality, durable finish and what to look out for.

Cheers!

I think Richard C posted a detailed one on this not so long ago, but I can't find it. Anyone?

i know richard prefers to get the artex off with a steamer first if he can but if not he'll skim straight over it.

if the pattern is deep then i guess a tight coat of bonding first before skimming lads?

It's not particularly deep. Around 2 mm with a few high spots at 5mm

A coat of green gritty stuff...Thistle Bond-it . will I think, do a better job than PVA. then skim over that. Stairs+ landing could be awkward and need temporary scaffold. Would cost c. £200 down here in sticks ( cash) London , it could be anything :? Would be interested in outcome £.
