I'm in the process of updating a 1971 house. I stripped the wallpaper of and it has left large areas of paint. I think it must have been put on as a base coat before wallpapering. I don't know what type of paint it is so not sure what to use to remove it. I have tried sanding a small area but it was slow going. What is the best stripper to use in this situation?

Why remove?

Because I need a smooth wall to paint. When I stripped the wallpaper off (Anaglypta) some of the paint was pulled off which leaves the wall very patchy.
