Hi all,

I am thinking about putting a smart lock on my front door. I want one that keeps my existing ABS lock as I don't trust Tech companies to have robust cylinders but the Smart Locks that I have seen either require a key or for the thumbturn to be removed. My lock has a thumb turn and I can see what looks like a cotter pin or something that seems to attach the thumb turn to the cylinder, but it is slightly suppressed vs the metal of the thumb turn itself. It also does not seem to have any flat head groove or obvious way to screw it out.

So the question is has anyone had experience removing the thumb-turn from an ABS lock?

Thanks in advance,

Jon

I’m not sure you can take a thumb turn off a Euro cylinder

I though smart locks replace the whole cylinder?

My guess is you need to take the thumb turn euro cylinder out….to do that undo the retaining screw in the edge of the door then put key in door and turn it until the euro cylinder locking nib lines up so it comes out.

Hi
I am facing the same issue
Did you solve this? Or replace the cylinder?
Thanks

The thumb turn on my ABS MK3 is too chunky for Nuki or Linus, so would either need to be cut down to fit or swapped for a key in cylinder.

The bigger problem I personally have with my ABS cylinder is that it doesn’t allow a key-in, operation. So if you leave a key-in for say Nuki, then you’ll struggle to manually unlock it normally in the event of a battery failure.

Given that you’ll not really need access to the key/thumb turn internally, replacing the cylinder for a key-in variant would be ok, but only if ABS do a cylinder that supports the ability to unlock from the outside when a key is already in…

I’ve spoken with Nuki today and they only support thumb turn locks on which you can remove the knob. And that it’s only the Go/old plasticky model that supports what they call Knob cylinders.

There must be a way to remove the knob. I’m just not sure if I’m willing to sacrifice the lock by trying.

Hi I ended up buying a new cylinder (Yale) - with 6 keys was about £50. Hopefully I'll be able to sell the avocet and recoup some of it.

Not for Nuki but for anyone with switchbot I think this adapter would work but might stick ot quite a lot:
