My driveway has a gravel chippings surface which is about 20 years old. Due to leaf decay and vehicles impacting it's now in a sorry state. The worst bits are carpeted with thick moss and mud.

So advice please on how to renew it. Should I remove the existing chippings or just spread new ones on top ?

Depends what you want from your drive and for how long.

I never recommend gravel in leafy areas because it cannot be swept. Gravel migrates - everywhere. Low usage areas of gravel drives attract weed growth. Deep gravel is a nightmare to 'swim' through. I never recommend block paving either for other reasons, though both methods do have their advantages.

However, you do need to give the drive a scrape with a grader before adding any fresh gravel.
