How to wire a shower pump under a bathtub?

Hi there,

Initially I was thinking of taking power from a light switch in the bathroom and using that to power the pump under the bath. I was surprised to read that this is not recommended - as it was a contractor that mentioned this method to me.

Alternatively, there is a mains powered fire alarm nearby. This has trunking from the consumer unit to outside the bathroom (fire alarm has its own fuse on the consumer unit). I was thinking of putting in a junction box near the alarm, spurring off that taking power across the ceiling down a wall (~4m), then through the wall emerging under the bathtub (<2m). This area is concealed by a bath panel which has to be removed using tools.

Also the pump's details:
Enclosure rating IPX4 (525W/full load 2.3 amps/fuse 5 amps).

Am I on the right track? How much should I expect an electrician to charge for doing the above? (Location: 1 bed flat in London, pump cost ~£150).

Many thanks in advance.

What sort of contractor?

No - it should be powered from a socket circuit, via an FCU preferably directly on the circuit, or spurred from it. The FCU doesn't have to be in the bathroom.

Consider fitting a flow-switch into the plumbing - this will be useful if you decide you'd like a fan triggered by the shower rather than the lights.

Thanks for the replies.

Ok so how much to pay someone to do it the "right" way?
